In Sumatra, localised smoke plumes were observed in the vicinity of hotspots in South Sumatra. Elsewhere in the region, there was no smoke haze observed due to rainy and cloudy conditions. With scattered showers forecast over the equatorial region, the hotspot and smoke haze situation in the region is expected to be generally subdued except for some hotspot activities in southern Sumatra. Isolated hotspots were detected in Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand, while few hotspots were detected elsewhere in the Mekong sub-region, as well as in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Localised slight to moderate smoke plumes were observed to emanate from isolated hotspots in western Myanmar with no significant smoke plumes observed elsewhere under thick cloud cover. Weather and Haze Outlook Wet conditions are forecast for most parts of the ASEAN region in the coming days, except for Myanmar, southern Sumatra, Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands where relatively drier weather is expected. Some isolated hotspots with localised smoke plumes may develop in parts of the region which remain dry. In the next few days, the prevailing winds north of the Equator are expected to blow from the southeast or southwest. The prevailing winds south of the Equator are forecast to blow mainly from the east or southeast, except for regions near the Equator where light and variable winds are likely. All maps are to be used solely for displaying meteorological/geophysical information, and not for any other purpose. All maps are not to scale and for illustrative purpose only. The hotspots depicted on the map are derived from the NOAA satellite and they represent locations with possible fires. Hotspots may go undetected due to cloudy conditions or incomplete satellite pass. At Alert Level 0 and Alert Level 1, the regional haze situation is updated once a day at 0900 UTC. The regional haze situation is updated more frequently at 0300 UTC and 0900 UTC upon activation of Alert Level 2 or Alert Level 3. Updates at 0300 UTC display hotspot information from night-time passes of the NOAA-20 satellite. Fewer hotspots were typically detected at night as fire activities usually peak during the day. Reprocessed satellite data will be availed at a later timing. The hotspot information derived from satellite data reprocessed may differ slightly from that received near real-time but reprocessing is necessary for better quality data. The 2500 ft winds (depicted by arrows) are model analysis winds. Seasonal Forecast for May – July 2024 Summary of Outlook The inter-monsoon period is likely to continue throughout much of May 2024. Light and variable winds with occasional shower activities can be typically expected for many parts of the ASEAN region during this period. The Southwest Monsoon usually establishes itself towards the middle of the year, with the prevailing winds transitioning to blow from the southeast to southwest, thus marking the onset of the traditional dry season for the southern ASEAN region. Concurrently, the Mekong sub-region will also transition to the traditional wet season, accompanied by an increase in shower activities. For May to July (MJJ) 2024 period, models predict an increased chance of above-normal rainfall over the equatorial period, with below-normal rainfall predicted for much of the rest of the ASEAN region in May and below-to near-normal rainfall for the May-July period overall. Above-normal temperature is predicted for the ASEAN region for MJJ 2024. El Niño conditions are predicted to transition to neutral during May 2024. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is currently neutral. El Niño tends to bring drier and warmer conditions to much of the region at this time of year. The effect of El Niño conditions may still be present for a while after its decay, particularly for temperature. During the outlook period of MJJ 2024, below-normal rainfall is predicted over the northern ASEAN region in May which could lead to a more prolonged dry season. Nonetheless, the elevated hotspot and transboundary haze situation is expected to gradually improve over the Mekong sub-region with the return of shower activities towards the middle of the year. Although above-normal rainfall is expected for parts of the southern ASEAN region, hotspot activities are likely to rise with the onset of the traditional dry season in June or July. As the prevailing winds are forecast to turn southeasterly to southwesterly, there may be an increased risk of transboundary haze occurrence during...
